Now Brewing: Timothy’s Winter Carnival: this winter specialty combines sweet flavors of caramel, vanilla, and custard for a seasonal blend which tastes just like a Christmas cookie left out for Santa on Christmas Eve or one fresh out of Grandma’s oven, ready for dunking into hot cocoa after sledding.
John Battelle, founder and CEO of Federated Media Publishing, said,
“Social Media marketing is about brands acting, well, social. Which means they need to show up to the party with a nice bottle of wine, if that’s what the party calls for. They need to come ready to have a dialog, and add value to the event.”
While marketing coach and columnist, Terry Brock wrote that social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn are all changing the way the world does business. Social Media platforms have given birth to a new era of marketing, which has emphasis on relationships. Brock wrote that relationship marketing is
“is all about connecting with people first as human beings and then as customers later. For a real business relationship to work, both parties must receive value. If only one or neither does, that relationship won’t continue for long.”
Social Media, as easily seen through the popular YouTube sensation, Social Media Revolution Socialnomics 2011:
is changing the world in which we live in, work in, play in, and as writers, write in.
As writers in a social media dominated world, we need to learn to market ourselves through these platforms. We need to work at gathering our network even BEFORE finishing a project or BEFORE contacting editors, publishers, and agents.
For writers, Twitter has become the place to congregate–to share ideas, to listen to others, to let others know what you’re doing. As I started out on Twitter, I simply listed in my About Me information tab that I was an aspiring writer and interested in publishing.
That was all it took.
Within a few days, publishers had followed me and I was able to communicate with other aspiring writers from all over the country and even abroad. I began to build my network. I began the process of learning to use social media to market myself and more importantly, my writing.
I followed @publishingtalk, which posts what could easily be described as a fair mix of social media tips and book speak. A few months back, they posted an article called “10 Twitter Hashtags for Writers.” A hashtag, in simple terms, is a way to reach other people talking about the same topic. It’s an easy way to share thoughts on an endless amount of things. You can even create your own hashes, making the possibilities range from #BestAlbumEver to #BritneySpears, which are both currently trending topics (meaning lots of people are tweeting about the same hashtag.)
From the list of hashtags, I personally have used #amwriting a lot for nothing more than to just let my network what I’m working on. It’s a really easy way to meet other writers and promote yourself in the process.
Another good handle to follow is @NCPPublishing, which has the information line of “A publishing company focused on quality over quantity.” It is currently accepting submissions from all genres of fiction writers– giving an awesome opportunity for writer’s looking for their chance at becoming published.
A final benefit from Twitter is a feature called TweetChats, which are open chatrooms of sorts under a certain hashtag. For example, if you head to TweetChat.com and type the #amwriting hash into the search bar, you’re able to see all of the tweets under that hash. Right now, it looks like there are a few live conversations too.
You can log into TweetChat at anytime, under any hash, to monitor or start conversations, making it an awesome platform to network with others in the writing and publishing communities.
Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project tackled the common misconceptions about Twitter being frivolous, saying that it’s not the case. He wrote,
” If it’s set up right, it’s a rich environment of lots of learning and sharing of important material. It’s not just ‘what I had for breakfast’.”
For writers, the possbilitites of enhancement through Twitter and other social media sites, are endless. With a little phrase like, “aspiring novelist, interested in publishing,” you can build your network, market yourself, and join the social media revolution.
Because, it’s not just a fad and it’s not all about what you had for breakfast.
